History for the Preservationist: W. G. Coyle and Company is listed in the 1869 New Orleans City Directory as Coal Dealers. It appears that Coyle Lines was an outgrowth of the coal operation and lead to other ventures. A news article from The Abbeyville Progress Aug 4, 1934 indicates the Steamer Helen of the Coyle Lines was the first vessel to transit the newly opened Intracoastal Canal from Algiers, LA the Coyle Lines dock to Houston with a load of Steel from Carnegie Steel in Pittsburg. On the return trip from Houston to New Orleans the Steamer Helen would be carrying a load of Sulphur. By 1966 Coyle Lines appears to have been purchased DeBardeleben Marine Corporation of Wilmington, Delaware. A pdf file of these documents is available upon purchase of the glasses.
