The role model:
The Prussian S10
1
The 1911 design was one of the most distinctive express steam locomotives on German tracks. With the low circulation, the wheel arches and the set-back external cylinders of the De Glehn design, it was on the road for the KPEV in express train service from 1911. In the history of its development, it has been very closely associated with the Grafenstaden machine factory in Alsace-Lorraine, where the executive director Alfred De Glehn worked. This had introduced the development of 4-cylinder compound locomotives in Europe.
In contrast, the Prussian S10 was
1
the 1914 type, on the one hand, a further development of the 1911 type with the aim of saving mass. The heavy frame stiffeners could be omitted by merging the 4 cylinders on one line. As a result, a preheater system could be installed to increase profitability. On the other hand, its engine arrangement made it very close to the Prussian S9 (built in 1907). It embodies a synthesis of these two lines of development.
Until the appearance of the large standard locomotives of the 01 and 03 series, the locomotives of the S10 family were THE express locomotives in northern and eastern Germany. In addition to heavy express and express trains, they pulled, among other things, the luxury train "Nord-Express" of the CIWL. After the 2nd World War I was able to switch the Deutsche Bundesbahn to the S10
1
due to the high number of standard steam locomotives. The S10 remained with the Deutsche Reichsbahn (East)
1
in use until the early 1960s. The last surviving S10 is in the Dresden Transport Museum
1
, the 17 1055, labeled as "1135 East".
Some S10
1
were delivered directly to Alsace-Lorraine from 1913 onwards. Others were added as reparations. There they drove in front of luxury trains to Basel in Switzerland. With the installation of an ACFI preheater in the 1920s, the appearance also changed. In 1938, when the state railway company SNCF was founded, the locomotives were designated as 1-230.G. The S10
1
were used at the Thionville depot until 1956 and then retired.
